So I've been reading the manga. Or well, 77 chapters of it. But I dunno where to find the rest yet. I need to work on school work before I die, after all. So I'm holding off.
This should be NEAR the end though. I mean, I know the anime. I'd be facinated to see if it goes on...longer than it does in that. Aarrrrgh. But, point is, I have some thoughts/observations.
I've seen the series something like, 3 times. So I was well acquainted with the plot before I ever even started reading. I love it, seriously. But. I didn't expect everything to hit SO much harder in this.
And I mean, in the anime, doesn't Toji SURVIVE the whole incident? I could be projecting the countless fanfics I've read onto this, but I swear I thought he lived. But in the manga--he doesn't. So i was sitting here reading all the time thinking "Shinji's going to find out he survived" but he never does. Toji's dead. Really dead.
Another thing that struck me is that SHINJI is different. He's a lot stronger in the manga. He isn't constantly running out of fear. I mean. He RUNS, yes, he leaves. But it's more out of anger and frustration and morals than fear. He's just stronger all around. He comes back wanting to fight BEFORE he sees Asuka and Rei failing in the Geofront...
And Kaworu. Oh. My. God. SO VERY DIFFERENT. In the anime he just simply loves Shinji for no reason other than the fact that Shinji needs it. And he plays the violin.
He's playing the piano in an abandoned church when Shinji first finds him. And pretty much DEMANDS that Shinji get him unlost and take him to school, and then kills a kitten. Just. With his bare hands. I was sitting here in complete SHOCK. Holy crap. And. And there's never that sweet scene in the bath where he says he was born to meet Shinji or the "What I'm saying...is that I love you" NONE of that. He makes a snide comment about Rei sacrificing herself to save Shinji and Shinji tried to knock his teeth out! And hyperventilates and passes out and stays with Kaworu for a few DAYS because he doesn't want to be around people mourning Rei. That would make it more real. And Kaworu wasn't mourning her. He didn't care.
It's just such a different picture of him. He's more...human. He wants Shinji to care for him, Shinji doesn't want to. And oh my god when it comes down to the end "If you have any feelings for me, kill me." and Shinji not wanting to and askfhjkashfaklsjfh He starts saying how Shinji won't because he'd feel guilty and that it was so self serving and did Shinji really hate him that much?
Just. Guh. I swear to god. And I was about sobbing when Rei gave her life and realized how much she cared for Shinji and the backlash of emotions that went to KAWORU in 02 that spawned his feelings for Shinji. Kaworu getting pissy because Shinji left as soon as he found out Rei was alive. Kaworu CLEARLY being the last angel for like, 10 chapters or something and TALKING about it and fighting for NERV anyhow...
And Kaji. And his backstory. And Misato. And and and. Guh. JUST. GUH.
I love the anime, I really do. But the manga just made everything more REAL and intense and oh my god. They were PEOPLE instead of problems. And I love it. If you haven't read it, READ IT. PLEASE. It's heartbreaking but it's wonderful. And I'm sorry that most of my flist won't get a damn thing out of this post because they don't know the series but trust me it's amazing.
Now I need to work. LAME.
