Hi again, posting once more, don't get used to it! The following post is technically for Kate, aka [livejournal.com profile] mythologiced, because the Real World sucks and we both know it. But, it may appeal to any likewise literary-minded folks on my flist, of which I'm sure there are at least a few.

♫ TRACK 01 ~ What do you do with a BA in English? from Avenue Q
Any sort of literary post-college playlist ought to start with this song, because it's true. What DO you do with a BA in English? And it does SUCK TO BE ME, or you, as the case may be, sometimes. But there's hope.
What do you do with a BA in English?
What is my life going to be?
Four years of college
And plenty of knowledge
Have earned me this useless degree.

♫ TRACK 02 ~ The Future Freaks Me Out by Motion City Soundtrack
Follows on logically. Useless degree, and consequently THE FUTURE FREAKS ME OUT.
We fail to represent
We fail to be content
We fail at everything we ever even try to attempt
And so the story goes
As only Betty knows
It’s time to take control.

♫ TRACK 03 ~ My Baby Loves a Bunch of Authors by Moxy Fruvous
This is who we are, we're disconnected from the "Real World" and see this as what reality should be. And it can...be problematic. But we can work it out!
I like to go out dancing
My baby loves a bunch of authors
We'll be together for ages
Eatin' and sleepin' and turnin' pages

♫ TRACK 04 ~ Wrapped Up in Books by Belle & Sebastien
Because some days, it would really just be easier.
I will say a prayer, just while you are sitting there
I will wrap my arms around you
I know it will be fine
We've got a fantasy affair
We didn’t get wet. We didn’t dare.
Our aspirations are wrapped up in books
Our inclinations are hidden in looks

♫ TRACK 05 ~ Role of a Lifetime from BARE: A Pop Opera
I'm sorry, this is actually a sad song, and not exactly literary so much as theatric. But it's about finding and struggling to be yourself in a world that doesn't want to accept who or what you are. And it's gorgeous.
The role of a lifetime is living a fantasy.
The trauma that you struggle to erase.
Thoughts battle words over deeds
A war with such casualties.
All played out behind a smiling face.
...
So we drive ourselves insane,
Spinning circles in our souls,
As we dance around and play pretend.
And once again,
Reprise our roles.

♫ TRACK 06 ~ The Tower of Learning by Rufus Wainwright
Learning, above all else, is what we know. We know how to be students, to absorb every ounce of information that someone can throw. What's not always easy, is learning to live afterwards.
I'm looking for the tower of learning
I'm looking for the copious prize
I saw it in your eyes, what I'm looking for
...
I saw it in your eyes, what will make me live.

♫ TRACK 07 ~ Count the Shadows by Chameleon Circuit
To lighten things up, some danger and the Doctor in library, dealing with living shadows. Don't judge me, okay. Because at heart, we are who we are because it's fun, right?
In the Library the darkness is waiting to attack
And some explorers went inside but they ain't never coming back
Namely Miss Evangelista, Anita and two guys called Dave
And the Shadows made four thousand other people disappear
And they've been hungry and waiting for a whole damn year
For some fresh meat that isn't gonna register as "Saved".

♫ TRACK 08 ~ Return to Oz by the Scissor Sisters
Nothing lasts, like college has to end and we have to see the real world for what it is, but that doesn't mean we can't lament it with a properly literary bit of music.
To return to Oz, we fled the world with smiles and clenching jaws
Please help me friend from coming down
I've lost my place and now it can't be found.

♫ TRACK 09 ~ Swich Licour by Gropius
More literary nerd music. This is, in fact, the prologue to Canterbury Tales set to some absolutely gorgeous music.
Whan that Aprill, with his shoures soote
The droghte of March hath perced to the roote
And bathed every veyne in swich licour,
Of which vertu engendred is the flour.

♫ TRACK 10 ~ I Wish I Could Go Back to College from Avenue Q
Self explanatory, and a self-indulgent dive back into Avenue Q, because it is, in fact, strangely appropriate. And in the end, we can't really go back.
I wish I could go back to college.
In college you know who you are.
You sit in the quad, and think, "Oh my God!
I am totally gonna go far!"

♫ TRACK 11 ~ Walking to Do by Ted Leo and the Pharmacists
This has been my CHEER UP, YOU CAN DO IT song for ages. Because you can't go back, you can only go forwards.
As long as we keep our stride,
I believe we'll be fine.

♫ TRACK 12 ~ Neverending Story by A Newfound Glory
Ending on a punk note, to an old classic of every girl or boy who ever loved to read. It takes you places and makes you more than you are, but it's your life that makes the difference, whether it's caught up in the Neverending Story or not. Make the best of it, and, in this case. ROCK OUT!
Show no fear
For she may fade away...
In your hand
The birth of a new day...
Rhymes that keep their secrets
Will unfold behind the clouds
And there upon a rainbow
Is the answer to a never ending story.
